NBI’s URICIL
What is a UTI?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is any microbial invasion that results in an inflammatory response in the epithelium of the urinary tract in any part of your urinary system, which includes your kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Learn the link between E.coli and UTIs here. More than 85% of UTIs are caused by uropathogenic E. coli. This bacteria attaches to the surface of the epithelial cells lining the inside of the bladder, called urothelial cells.
UTIs are more common in women because their urethras are shorter and closer to the rectum. This makes it easier for bacteria to enter the urinary tract and can be frustrating and uncomfortable. However, it’s usually a minor illness when an infection only affects the bladder. You can try many effective OTC UTI treatment options. Find more about Urinary Tract Infections here.
Many effective OTC UTI treatment options, such as Neptune Bio Innovations (NBI) URICIL for UTI, can help treat your UTIs.
Concerns about antibiotics resistance
Patients are increasingly aware of the significance of responsible antibiotic use to decrease the risk of developing antibiotic resistance and collateral damage. At some point, most people have been prescribed a course of trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) or ciprofloxacin (Cipro), two common antibiotics used for UTIs. However, in the last few years, it has become clear that the chances these antibiotics will kill most UTIs are reducing rapidly.
"Antibiotic resistance" occurs naturally. However, antibiotic resistance increases are driven by a combination of germs exposed to antibiotics as well as the spread of those germs and their resistance mechanisms. Antibiotic resistance means the bacteria or fungi causing the infection are resistant to the antibiotic or antifungal treatment. It, however, does not mean our body is resistant to antibiotics.
Antibiotics save lives, yet their frequent use can result in the development of resistant germs. Antibiotic resistance is fastened when the presence of antibiotics pressure bacteria and fungi to adapt, all those germs survive and multiply because have resistance traits in their DNA that can spread to other germs.
In the case of UTIs, antibiotics are still deemed the best and the fastest means of treatment despite the side effects. This has prompted research for natural alternative forms of OTC UTI treatment to prevent and manage the symptoms of the infection while also lowering antibiotic use.
Natural ways to prevent a UTI
Research shows that up to 40% of bladder infections can be cleared with non-prescription steps that can include increased water intake and pain relief medications such as ibuprofen. When UTI symptoms initially develop and urine test results are pending, it can be important to take these steps for avoiding unnecessary antibiotics. This will also assist to ensure that appropriate antibiotics are prescribed when needed.
There are several ways women can take to avoid a urinary tract infection such as drinking water, taking cranberry supplements or a low-dose antibiotic after sexual intercourse, and using vaginal estrogen for those who are postmenopausal. While over-the-counter (OTC) treatments are preferred by many if a fever develops or symptoms persist beyond a day, antibiotic therapy can be crucial for some infections to ensure they don't spread from the bladder to the kidneys.
